India Consumer Price Index release — 6 September 2026
What this is
The month's retail inflation figure, published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. It is released at 16:00 IST on a scheduled day each month — after the Indian close, so the session that reacts is the next one.
Who decides
Nobody decides it; it is measured. Prices are collected across urban and rural markets and weighted into one index. The headline number is the year-on-year change, and the core figure that strips food and fuel is what the rate committee is generally read as watching.
What moves
It reaches the index through the rate path rather than directly. A print far from what was polled changes what the market reads into the next policy meeting, and that reprices the rupee, the bond curve and the banking sector before it reaches the broad index.
What it is not
The release is after the close, so the day it is dated on carries no reaction at all. Any figure on this page describing the market is about the following session.
What is priced, and what has followed
too few of these carry an option quote from the archive to compare what was asked with what followed
half of them landed between 0.15% and 0.77% either way
only 6 past cases — too few to say much
